The student has completed at least module 1-4, and have sufficient understanding in English.

Description
Students become familiar with the globalization of firms. They obtain skills for planning the internationalization of companies, particularly related to sales. Students develop their communication and culture skills for working in English in multicultural business environments. Students also have a possibility to develop their English or other language and culture skills.

Globalization and internationalization 4 cr (ORG1LZ101A)
Communication and culture 6 op (ORG1LZ101B)
Language skills 5 cr (ORG1LZ101C)

Learning outcomes and assessment

Each module component will be assessed on the 0-5 scale.

 

Globalization and internationalization (GLO1LZ101A) 4 cr

 

Grades 1–2: The student

  • knows the basic drivers and effects of globalization for firms and is able to identify some of the opportunities and challenges the international business environment poses.
  • has a rudimentary knowledge of operation modes in global markets.
  • knows the basic principles of internationalizing a firm’s value chain and utilizing value networks.
  • is able to participate as part of a team in analyzing the target market and drawing up a basic internationalization plan for a value chain activity of a firm.

 

Grades 3–4: The student

  • knows the different drivers and effects of globalization for firms and is able to analyze the opportunities and challenges the international business environment poses.
  • has a good knowledge of various operation modes in global markets.
  • is familiar with internationalizing a firm’s value chain and utilizing value networks.
  • is able to analyze the target market and draw up an internationalization plan for a value chain activity of a firm.

 

Grade 5: The student

  • is able to identify the different drivers and effects of globalization for firms and to analyze the relevant opportunities and challenges the international business environment poses.
  • has a solid knowledge of various operation modes in global markets.
  • has an analytical comprehension of how to internationalize a firm’s value chain and utilize value networks.
  • is able to analyze the target market by choosing relevant information and draw up a well justified internationalization plan for a value chain activity of a firm.

 

Communication and culture (GLO1LZ101B) 6 cr

 

The studies represent the B2 level of the Common European Framework in business English skills.

Grades 1–2: The student

  • copes in English in the most typical work and business-related communication situations.
  • is aware of the general significance of linguistic and stylistic appropriateness in different types of business communication in English.
  • is familiar with the role of English as a global business language.
  • knows the basic cultural dimensions affecting international business.

 

Grades 3–4: The student

  • copes well in English in typical work and business-related communication situations and in more informal work situations.
  • is aware of the significance of linguistic and stylistic appropriateness in different types of business communication in English and has a basic conception of the use of language and communication services.
  • is familiar with the role of English as a global business language and the underlying linguistic and cultural implications. 
  • has a general understanding of cultural dimensions affecting business and basic skills to work in a multicultural business environment.

 

Grade 5: The student

  • communicates successfully in English in most work and business-related communication situations and in more informal work situations.
  • knows the significance of linguistic and stylistic appropriateness in different types of business communication in English and knows how to access language and communication services.
  • is familiar with the role of English as a global business language and is able to analyze the underlying linguistic and cultural implications.
  • has a solid understanding of cultural dimensions affecting business and possesses the central skills to work in a multicultural business environment.

 

Recognition of Learning (RL/AHOT)

Recognition of Learning process allows the student to receive credits based on prior experience (demonstration) or higher education study (credit transfer) as well as to educationalise through Work&Study ongoing work into study credits. See further instructions in Mynet.

 

Connection to business
Teams of students draw up an internationalization plan for a Finnish SME.

 

International aspect
The teaching language of the module is English, and the module is open for exchange students as well.

 

Teaching and learning methods
Contact lessons (lectures, hands-on cases, simulations, team coaching sessions, project work presentations and team work), individual work (pre-assignment, quizzes, self or peer evaluation) and group work (internationalization plan for a SME company).
