Prerequisites

Successful completion of ENG1LH002 Business English and ENG2LH001 English for International Business.

Learning outcomes

The aim is to strengthen students’ command of business terminology, written communication skills in professional contexts and spoken communication skills. The course enhances and deepens students’ abilities in using spoken and written English in their chosen area of specialization (ASO).

Course contents

Upon successful completion of the course, the student

  • has revised and expanded his/her business terminology and learned the central English terminology of his/her specialization area.
  • has practised spoken business communication in English, such as brief presentations, panel discussions or, conversations on current economic topics.
  • has improved his/her written business communication skills in English and developed skills for his/her specialization area.
  • has become familiar with the typical spoken and written communication situations of his/her specialization area.
  • has practiced the use of different means of support necessary for later personal development in communicating in English for specific business purposes.

The course corresponds to the B2 level of the Common European Framework.

International dimension

The course develops the student's professional English skills in his/her area of specialization.

Teaching and learning methods

The course includes contact lessons, independent work and work in teams, altogether 81 h of student work.
The course may also be run as an online version, with corresponding individual assignments.

Accreditation of Prior Learning (APL)

Students may demonstrate their command of the aims and contents of the course obtained through nonformal and/or informal learning by taking part in the APL procedure. In such cases, evaluation on the 0-5 scale is based on a written test (weight 50%) and a portfolio (50%).

Assessment criteria

Students' performance is graded on the following scale: Excellent (5), Very good (4), Good (3), Satisfactory (2), Fair (1), Fail (0). The assessment criteria is presented on scale 1 to 5.

Grade 1 (min. 40% of the objective)

Grade 3 (min. 70% of the objective)

Grade 5 (min. 90% of the objective)

Written and spoken assignments, the final exam, active participation and classroom performance are at a good level in terms of knowledge, skills and their further professional application. The student demonstrates an emerging ability for autonomous professional development in the field of study.

Written and spoken assignments, the final exam, active participation and classroom performance are at an excellent level in terms of knowledge, skills and their further application. The student is clearly capable of autonomous professional development and the application of his/her knowledge and skills in the field of study.

All assignments and the final exam must be successfully completed to pass the course.

The assessment of one’s own learning does not influence the grade. The assignment is the same for all courses/modules and the answers will also be used for course/module development. The assignment is completed on an electronic form.
