The student has completed ENG1LH002 Business English.

Learning outcomes

Upon completion of the course, the student will have deepened his/her spoken and written business English skills and his/her skills in adapting communication in English for the purposes of different operational environments. S/he will have learned the significance of using English in an appropriate manner in business and will have acquainted him/herself with matters linked to using English language and communication services.

Course contents

  • Revision and further development of business terminology
  • Spoken business communication in English: presentations, meetings, negotiations
  • Written business communication in English: support material for presentations, meeting documents, principles of business correspondence
  • Multicultural skills as part of business communication knowhow in English
  • The business significance of appropriate communication in English
  • The use of language and communication services

The course corresponds to the B2 level of the Common European Framework.

International dimension

The course prepares students for appropriate business communication in English in different international situations

The course includes contact lessons and independent work, altogether 81 h of student work.

Accreditation of prior learning (APL)

Students with previous studies or experience in the content area of the course can demonstrate their skills prior to the course and thus obtain credit for the course without participating in contact teaching. The demonstration of skills can be taken only once, before taking part in the course. The demonstration of skills for the course includes a written exam and a writing portfolio. The portfolio will be assigned once the written test has been completed successfully. Teppo Varttala (teppo.varttala@haaga-helia.fi) is in charge of the APL procedure of the course for all three campuses.

Assessment of learning

Assessment is based on

  • the demonstration of business terminology knowledge
  • the demonstration of skills in spoken business communication in English: presentations, meetings, negotiations
  • the demonstration of skills in written business communication in English: support material for presentations, meeting documents, principles of business correspondence
  • the demonstration of cultural knowledge and skills in using English
  • the demonstration of an awareness of appropriate business communication in English
  • the demonstration of knowledge related to using business communication services

Assessment criteria

All assessment components must be completed successfully to pass the course. Students' performance is graded on the following scale: Excellent (5), Very good (4), Good (3), Satisfactory (2), Fair (1), Fail (0). Evaluation is based on the following criteria:

 Written and spoken assignments, the business writing portfolio, the final exam and classroom performance are at a good level in terms of knowledge, skills and their further professional application. The student demonstrates an emerging ability for autonomous professional development in the field of study.

 Written and spoken assignments, the business writing portfolio, the final exam and classroom performance are at an excellent level in terms of knowledge, skills and their further application. The student is clearly capable of autonomous professional development and the application of his/her knowledge and skills in the field of study.

• The assessment of one’s own learning does not influence the grade. The assignment is the same for all courses/modules and the answers will also be used for course/module development. The assignment is completed on an electronic form.
